I realize the 240 bumpers are just trim pieces and don't do much to protect the car. But what about 280 bumpers? I thought they were just to protect the car from damage in parking lot dings and stuff like that. I think if you hit something at say, 30 mph head on in a 280, the bumpers wouldn't save the car.

So what's the deal with the bumpers?

Matt,

When I used to have my 280ZX I was bored and looked through the owners manual. If you look at the bumpers it said it can withstand bumps at 5mph or something like that. I thought that was kinda funny, I saw that years ago but check out the owners manual.

So when you run into stuff make sure its at 5mph and below hahahha

Yes, 280Z bumpers are 5 mph crash bumpers. No bumper in the world is going to save a car at anything above that. 280Z bumpers are rather quite generous. New cars can not stand any kind of hit without extensive body damage. Minimun body over hangs, integrated bumpers, and stylized headlights make minor fender benders very costly.

The entire car becomes the bumper in a collision at speed. Cars are designed to save the driver and passengers. You ever hear of "front and rear crumple zones"? That means the entire front or rear end crumples in a collision, absorbing the energy of the crash.
