Howdy folks. I have some aluminum rear brake drums on
a '72 240Z. I'd like to check my rear brakes out, and I tried
to get the drums off but they're frozen on there! I guess
that's what happens when you have iron and aluminum side
by side.

Anyhow, does anybody know a slick trick to get these
Z drums off?

I thought of using a torch and ice, but that's kind of
extreme.

I rebuilt my rear brakes on my '71 about two weeks ago. I had one come off easy, the other was stuck tight. I used some penatrating oil and tapped between lugs but it still would not come off. I finaly got out the propane torch and heated between the lugs and around the hole in the center of the drum, after a couple of taps with the hamer it popped free.

I agree with John. Be carefull with the heat and tapping cuz the alum
drums can warp or crack if you pound on them too hard while heated . Have patience
Once you start to see the drum move away no more heat.
All that white powdery alum oxidation buildup.
To prevent the problem from happening again; I cleaned the hub with a wire
brush then very lightly coated the hub surface with high temp grease.I also
coat the stud threads to prevent frozen lug nuts.
