i am finishing my 240z after 3 years of restro., question, of th 3 5sp. transmission"-77"-"78" or"80-"84" or"85"-"89",witch on is the best? i read somewhere that the 80-84 5 sp trans were the best. any commets? thank you randell
If you only want to change the transmission - get a 5-spd out of the 77-79 year range. They have the same first 4 gears as your existing car pretty much and will give you the overdrive. If you want the best combination, get a 3.90 rear end (if you don't have one already) and put in the 81-83Zx 5-spd. It will give you better accelleration in 3rd & 4th and a lower cruising RPM in 5th than the earlier versions.
4th gear is the same in all Z transmissions (1:1). 3rd is the same in all Z 5spds. 1st, 2nd and 5th are higher in the '81-'83, so acceleration is worse, thus you want to go with a higher rear end (the 3.90) if you go with a '81-'83
need master and slave clutch, flywheel, pressure plate-friction disk and release bering.also a5 sp gearbox and manual transmission driveshaft, but all this is easy to get here in sacramento, lots of pick-n-pulls and u-pull it's any questions call 916-448-0649 home phone randell
for your stock rearend ratio, a fivespeed from a 280, or a 280ZX up to around 82 would work. If you get the late (83-84)ZX five speed, they have a DEEP O.D.(LIKE .72 VS .82/.89 FOR THE EARLIER MODELS) the .72 od will have you passing EVERYBODY at 3000 rpm! If you get the late trans, get the differential, too. the 3.90 and 3.70 gears really work well in the early cars with the late trans. My trans is out of an 84 skyline turbo (same as 84 zx) with the .72 o.d., and I use a 3.70 R200. the car goes around 65 at the top of second gear (63-6400rpm), so it's great for the on-ramp grand prix!
