I've got this junk 260 that I'm getting ready to have hauled to the scrap heap... I've stripped it pretty much but there's this bar on the back bumper... some kind of bolt on accessory deal. I've gotten mixed feelings on if it's worth anything or not and I can't to seem to find any info on it anywhere. If it's not worth a ****, I'd rather not go through the trouble of taking it off and it can just go with the car... anyone know anything about this mystery bar??

Motorsport has these bars in the catalog and they call them overrider bars. My guess is that they help to protect the car from MINOR collisions. Can't say that they work well or not. I have one on the front of my 71. Eventually I'll get one for the back bumper, when my financial advisor says I can.

These overrider bars were optional (dealer installed or factory?) and were brought about as Datsun prepared for the "new" USA crash standards that were about to be implemented. We now know this as "5 MPH Bumpers", the idea being that the car would suffer no damage at a 5 MPH impact. That's the reason for the large heavy bumpers on 75-79 Zs.

These days that non-profit insurance testing company puts new cars through the same 5 MPH tests and even cars that suffer $2000 damage can pass as "acceptable."

Do what other guys have done, Take it off; put the item on e-Bay and sell it, have buyer pay shipping.

If nothing else you might pick up 20-50 bucks depending. Remember not all Z owners are on this forum.

kelstar ,I have the rear overrider ,, if you have the front one I am interested if the chrome is in good shape. Your rear one is , if in good cond, $30. to $50 . Gary Portland Ore. One thing about Zs being that they sit so low other cars in parking lots can tap the hood easley and break the tail lights . thats why they were an option .
