bad idle

Hey all, I'm new to the posts. I have however, been using the invaluable info from everyone. Let me briefly sum up the situation. I have owned my 83 280zx for 15 yrs. It finally tired out and my wife couldn't part with it, so its rebuild time. Interior completely redone, 80% complete bodywork, L28 completely rebuilt $1400 (everthing to specs). $3000 total invested to date. The only mod to the engine was a header. Here we are today. Motor and all the dressings in place, TDC right on. She wants to start, but dies, hold the gas down and she starts right up. Runs bad, popping from the front and will not hold idle unless you goose the gas. Tach kinda jumpy, slow to fall to 0 (didn't do this before rebuild) I've been working on this car now ( almost everyday) for 2 months. Any advice on where to begin or shorten the hunt is greatly appreciated. TIRED!!! Like to add pics but didn't know how.

I'm not that great of mechanic on these cars, but did you check that the plug wires are routed to the right holes? Sometimes the things so basic are the things we over look.
Is the cam correctly timed to the crankshaft?

Place #1 cyl @ TDC on Compression stroke, remove cam cover and inspect your cam sprocket groove to camshaft thrust plate notch.

Validate that the distributor / oil pump drive spindle is timed correctly at 11:25 O-clock position w/ offset to the front of the car.

And yeah, like IA 78 said, check for crossed wires.
check afm boot for holes or just loose or out of calibration
