Bad belt squeel

799 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  ThxZ
1984 300zx 50th anniversary. When ever I start it cold, or have the AC on and push on the brake at the same time I get an awful belt noise. If i rev it up to about 4500 RPM the sound goes away. Within the last 2 months I have had all new belts on the car. It seems like I need to tighten one but i am not sure which I need to adjust and the best method of doing so on this car. Please let me know your thoughts on which belt and how I should tighten it.

z31 seem to need supertight belts compared to most other vehicles I have worked on. search on the problem. some recomend roughing up the pulley with some abrasive. belt dressing in my experience is a temporary solution. Getting them tighter than I thought necessary is what finally worked on my 85T. new belts in particular need to be redone because of wear and stretch.
Awesome! Thanks for the info. Do you have an idea on a more permanent solution?
I have my belts tightened to spec per the FSM and have no squeal issues. Since your squeal is coming with AC on and when you press brake, that could indicate (at least to my feeble brain) that your issue could be alternator related -- i.e., increased load on alternator and a slightly loose belt = squeal. IMHO belt dressing is not even a temporary solution. It gets crap all over and doesn't fix anything.
I had some squealing issues on my 85 Turbo for awhile and changed the belts and still had same issue. You will need to re-tighten new belts as they stretch. I did eventually solve my noise issue when I found that one of the alternator bolts that attach the alt. to the car was missing. The bolt was behind the coolant tube so I didnt notice it was missing. Got that back in and no more squeal. Dont know you have that problem, but worth a look.
