Last weekend spotted a 300zxt(probrably 86-87) at the local pick n pull with the differential still on it. Wanted to know if it is an easy swap with no modifications needed. Also what type of performance gains would I get with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated........

Jack up the back and spin the tires if they rotate the same direction it is positration or limited slip . Do get it if it has all white with white wheels it won't fit .All you have to do is swap input flanges . You will get a 3.7 ratio and LSD a big bonus do it and it will only take a day .

Another quick reference. If it's a 87 there is a chance it's a LSD. 86 models were not, but maybe it was added later. Look for the fins on the rear cover, if they are there it's a limited slip. Grab it if you can get it for anything under $400.

P.S.: The all white turbo car clint is referring to is a 88SE. Stay away from that car. It's shafts won't work in a 240-280 car.

To swap input flanges you just take off the big nut holding it and swap them. The nut is on pretty tight, I have to use a prety big breaker bar to loosen it. You only have to swap the input flange if you are using a 300z rear in a earlier z car. As far as the price, the going rate for a limited slip is about $400. About the cheapest you will find them is $250, unless someone doesn't know what they have. Standard rears are only worth about 50 bucks. Stay on watch at your local junkyard for the 87-89 turbo 300zx's. They have the limited slips. Once one hits the yard I would guess the rear in it won't last a day before someone grabs it.
