I have found a 1975 Z for sale. How can you tell the difference between a 260z and a 280z?

Owner has basically rebuilt the thing and he says it's a 280, but I'm not so sure.

Thanks

RE: 1975

A 75 is a 280z. 280Z's have big crash bumpers, a fuel injected 2.8l motor. 260z's have smaller, more contoured bumpers, and a caburetted 2.6l motor.

You can also look at the identaplate in the door jam on the drivers side. if manufacture date is after 12/74 but before 12/79 it is a 280. I might be off a month it could be 11/74 not 12/74.

It will also say 280z on the dash in front of the passenger. There are 2 bumper styles for the 280z's but bost are still large. Fuel injection is your most noticable thing to look at. Other than that they are pretty similiar. Sam 75 280z

RE: 1975

Okay, heres the real poop! In late 1974, Datsun could not certify the first of the 280 z cars with fuel injection for the federal model. So the first month and a half of 280 production were actually carbed with the 260 system. After that, Datsun got their certification for the fuel injection and started making them. I know this because there is one guy in my local PA area still using this car with a prod date of 1/75 with 260 carbs on it with no fuel inj parts on it! Second, my local Nissan Service manager has said to me that this caused all sorts of confusion for them in that period because the service manuals did not conform to the cars. Third, I have seen two other cars in boneyards that are of production dates between 12/74 and 1/75 that have this same system on them. If you guys need proof of this claim, the cars are still in the yards and I will go get pictures of the carbs and identoplates and will send them to you. BTW, all 280z's have the big crash bumpers as the 280 production was well past the july 74 federal mandate for bumper protection.
