Hi all. Just got my first Z about a month ago, 1981 280zx n/a AT, wanted a 5spd but just got to good of a deal on this one. Perfect paint, only one rust spot and only 75k original miles for $1500. Well anyway, I want to do the simplest thing either get an overdrive unit added on or, swap to a 5spd. I know they have aftermarket overdrive for chevys and such but not sure on the Z. The 5spd is my present option but would rather get the OD idt that would be cheaper, as I am a full time student. any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Edhash

I'm in the process of negotiating a 6-spd t-56 from my local chevy dealer. If you'd like I'll let you know what I pay for it. Are you talking about that unit that sits behind the transmission? Basically like a transmission for your transmission? It stands to reason that one of those would require a new driveshaft. That would be a bigger investment. Those supposedly work pretty well.

I was looking for an add on for my current 3spd Auto. The 6 Speed intrests me greatly, hehe idling at 70 sweet, I just don't know if I want to go all the trouble of that right now, as I eventually plan to swap in a ford 302 sorry, i'm one of those ford guys. I'm just looking for a temporary thing for about a year or so until I get another daily driver
