I don't recomend an auto unless you are making lots and lots of torque. My car's engine is a L28 w/diesel crank, p90 head, and t3 turbo. I am running fuel injection and 15lbs boost. It does 13.2 @ 108mph. This is w/a slow shifting auto. If you do decide to go w/ an auto, use an auto that can be built up. IE: c-4,c-6,th350,700r4,200.4r,727 torqueflite, etc as I have not been able to find any way to beef up the tranny used in stock Z's.

where can an adapter be found to use a 200r4 or is it easy to make your own.

I have been pondering the auto in my car as well. Do you think the stock Z auto will take more punishment than you are giving it? Also, those Trans you listed, do you know of a way to adapt them to an L-28. You said you are running a t3 unit, if you went to a beefy hybrid t3/t04 I would bet you could take 8/10's of your quarter time.

Ian,
I also have a auto Z. I am not happy with the performance of the 3spd. A upgrade that might be good is one I have been trying to piece together.
I have procedure and prints for putting in a four speed auto out of maxima and have been talking to a shop in new jersey who does tranny upgrades. They have told me that the valve unit can be upgraded, stronger clutches installed and a locking torque converter installed. I can e-mail some of the info I have if you like.

most people don't realize this, but the jatco unit in the z cars is a carbon copy of a ford c-4. problem is , none of the hard parts interchange. you may look into using the springs out of a c-4 kit. these would most likely do the job. or you could even compare a stock c-4 with your jatco, as the c-4 may be set up for firmer shifts. call a parts dealer that specializes in transmission parts and ask about a transgo kit for the jatco. they may still make one. i know they used to. these are great kits, i've installed them on many trannies. if all else fails, a specialist at the tranny parts dealer may be able to set you up with the right springs, no matter what transmission they were originally designed for.

Ok, I know i need a t3/t4, but can't afford it at this time. Soon I will have that and DFI, then we will see what happens.
I don't know if the stock tranny can handle any more than what I'm throwing @ it. Keep in mind that I bought it well used from a junk yard for $100. I did not even rebuild it!!! It seems to be holding up though. The junk yard I got i from is kinda a Z specialist and he said that I was the first person to buy one of these tranny's. That says to me that they must be pretty strong. However, it just shifts slow. My buddy has a 5.0 Mustang w/a c-4 and it just goes BANG! when it shifts. He can chirp the tires on every shift. This is what I want. I do a lot of street racing and it aint cuttin' it the way it is. All i can say is that for $100.00 it's worth trying in your application. That junk yard has 2 more of them so if anybody wants one, email me. [email protected]

> What is your 60ft times. I don't know what torque my engine has, but with a 2.4 bored 20 thou, flat tops, .330 lift cam, head work, bigger valves, triple 42mm webers, extractors, 2.5 exhaust, 5 speed and 3.35 gears which i suspect is too high ran a 15.3 at 93 mph, with a clutch that was bad and has now been replaced. My 60 ft was 2.3 seconds and i hope that the auto would be quicker.
