Trying to do some research during my tear down. Have gotten a lot of info here, but have a few questions; I have a 73 Z with auto trans but will be changing to manual on the rebuild. I have a spare engine and trans from a 72 Z. I'll be using that trans. I need to clarify some of the wiring. On the auto there are two wires on the left side of the trans (black wires). From what I can tell these are for the kick down solenoid and will not be needed on the manual trans. On the right side of the auto are the four wires , 2 for the inhibitor switch and 2 for the back up lights. I know the inhibitor wires need to be connected together so the car will start with the manual trans. The other two wires are for the back up lights. On the manual trans I only see one switch on the left side of the trans with 2 black wires. What is the switch for? As I see it, I need a neutral safety switch and switch to connect the back up lights. Am I missing something or do I have to add another switch? Thanks in advance for your help.

I am not aware of wires coming out of the trans on the left side of a manual. The only holes on the bell housing of a manual are on the right side and are 1) speedo cable & 2) reverse light switch.

Well, a '72 has no neutral safety switch for the manual transmission. I suppose you could wire one in using the auto trans Inhibitor circuit. A factory manual trans 240 will not have the inhibitor components - but you do.

I'm with "cats" on the trans switch locations. Early through ZX, the stock L-series 4 and 5-speed trans have a reverse switch location on the right side. I would ask what transmission you have? Easy enough to test the left side switch - "ohm" it out. Move the trans through the gears and see when the switch "is made". If it's closed in neutral, there's your neutral switch. If it's closed in reverse, there's your reverse switch. If it's closed in 6th, there's your top gear switch...

Pics of the manual trans may have helped.

My mistake, the switch on the 72 manual is on the right side, so that is most likely the reverse switch. I was surprised to find out that there was no neutral safety switch from the factory. I was thinking the same thing, fabricate one using the inhibitor wires. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't reinventing the wheel. Thanks for your reply.

Manuals don’t need a neutral safety switch, and none I have owned have one. They are for automatics only. Just don’t hit the starter unless you have the clutch depressed.

I have seen stick tranny cars that have a switch on the clutch pedal requiring it to be depressed before the starter will engage. That’s your safety switch if you want one. Not really needed IMO, but YMMV.

No not my first stick, all the fun vehicles I have or had are stick (240z, z3bmw, honda crx, Nissan pick up, 69 mustang, FF Cobra, etc).
