The main focus on the diesel engine (LD28) when relating to a z-car is the use of its crankshaft. This crank has a longer stroke then the 280 crank, but has the same main and rod bearing sizes. With the right combination of rod and piston you get an L-series engine with displacements in the 2.9 to 3.1 liter range. There is some debate as to the effectiveness of these combinations and the cost associated with the modifications.
