In my continued smog adventures, I replaced my bad AFM with a junkyard one. They have different colored lables and the numbers are way off. The orig. AFM had the same color label as the ECU and similar numbers. Is it possible the AFM and ECU work as a matched set? In other words, are they calibrated to work as a team, so using a differently calibrated one will cause crappy running. Just curious.

Good question, and one I don't think I've heard before. I would have to say, no with a but.

No, they can be replaced independently, but they are serialized, and certain numbers go with certain cars. So any AFM with the right serial numbers can go in certain years, and the same with the ECU.

The biggest change was the 77-78 5 pin vs 7 pin AFM. All 78's and some 77's did not have the fuel pump shutoff contacts. There were other minor tweaks, but that was the biggest.

Sorry, I don't have the serial number list. Maybe someone else does?
