woW!!! it is really cool.... it sounds neat.. kinda like a truck only more... european I guess... that is, if I knew how european sounded... anyway I wenty to the exhaust shop and got 3" straight out... no cat no muffin... at idle it's quite... anywhere else and it's a monster... at high RPM's(only had it as hiogh as 4000 so far with the 3") it sounds sooooo good.... the turbo is very audible and it seems to have more power... could be in my head but I doubt it... any way it cost me 100$$ canadain... I think that was pretty good... now all I need is a flashy tip... I'm thinkin a little bigger than 3" but nothing stupid like 5" or crap like that... actually the little piece that the guy put on was nice.. just 3" pipe cut at an angle and it actually looks very nice.. it's just that I want a smoother edge and I like it shiny...Zya guys

100 bucks canadian?!?

where do you live
where did you get this done?

I have an 82 ZXT and I'm looking at getting 3' turbo back exhaste.....

you get atleast 20 HP gain from the upgraded exhaste... probly more given the fact you don't have a cat or muffler

Re: 100 bucks canadian?!?

Now thats not entirely fair, with a turbo the bigger exhaust and no cat or muffler thats believable.

every pound of backpressure on the turbo eats 2 hp

it's a lot faster...>!!!!

holy mofo... I can't believe what has happened to my baby!!! LOUD!!!! but not too loud and in no way ricey more... hic.... it's a good thing though I promise if it sounded stuppid I would say it sounded stupid but it doesn't... well anyway I hope in and go for a cruse.. well I'm out on the highway and the only thing that wants a race was ann old buick with about 7 kids in it and they tried to rev it.. it just spuddered a bit so I shrugged it off and went on my way.. well they blew by me about a Km later and I just laughed as I droped into 3rd and scooted by... no big deal barely broke 5000RPM well I get to the light to go farther away from the city on the #1(trans canada) and it's red.. this new sunfire GT pulls up beside and the light turns green and he guns it so I figure ok does this guy really think he can beat a Z... I passed him no prob.... then about a Km away after I slow to speed limit(I think my speedo doesn't work still) he's commin up fast so I drop to 4( I was doin about 135 I didn't want to go to 3... and he couldn't even get to my bumper and i was pullin away.. I look down at my boost gauge and HOLY $HIT it said a little past 10lbs!! I couldn't believe it... I've had my boost controller wide open and I could only get a little more than 8... can a new exhasut really do that?!??!? very cool... o ya what does detonation feel like????

Take the old piece that you liked and get it plated. Actually, before that, sand it how you want it; then get it plated. You could also put some black high-temp engine block paint on the area in front of the chrome plating to get an effect similar to what you can get from ANSA, Monza etc. Why buy a chromed tip and pay for the fabrication, plating and markup when you already have a tip that you like that just needs chrome. We sell the paint and the 3" tubing at Childress Race Cars if you want to call:877 476 1616. We make roundy-round cars and our guys are the best at what they know and do.

PS: My 71 Z feels right at home parked in front of a stock car producing shop. I have often wondered if I could get a 3" exhaust to work on my car. Would it help an old 71?

wish I knew...

I doubt it.. you probably don't want to go bigger than 2.5".... I got 3" because my car has a turbo... and the word on the street is that the faster the exhaust is released the quicker the turbo will spool and I have also leared that youc an creat more boost with a high flow exhaust and I don't think you can get much more free flowing than 3".. a non turbo engine needs some backpressure for low end torque.. try 2.5" straight out to a flowmaster or any other turbo muffler....

Re: wish I knew...

I have 2 1/2 on my 71 and its pretty much stock except for the cam and the header but the bigger exhaust helps and sounds really good. But I have a muffler on it cause I drive it around town. laterzzzzzz

If you read the posts,a lot of people who aren't souping up their engines don't like the 2.5" exhaust system. A lot of resonance and not much horsepower gain up top at the expense of low end.

The people w. 2.25" say it's the only way to go.

I too, have a 280ZXT with 3" stainless pipe from downpipe to 3" cat to 3" straight-thru Dynomax oval can.

Quiet and authorotative - I don't lose much w/the racing cat, and I', squeaky clean at the exhaust. (Yeah, the 3" pipe before the cat and larger cat are theoretically illegal, but I wrapped the pipe before the cat to keep heat in). As long as the car is so clean - they don't care - an I have annual emissions inspections here in Atlanta.....

I used to have a 3" flowmaster setup (non-stainless and non-mandrell bent) that I hated (too loud). Put this on and go MUCH better spool-up and pwer across the board.
