I have a 1988 300ZX. Just replaced Alternator, Ran it for about a minute to check belt. Got back under and felt Alternator. It was very hot!! Is it supposed to run extremely hot or not. And if not what is wrong. New Alt. came with a external capacitor, Old one had internal cap. and 3 wires hooked to it, Battery, Big plug and ground. Do I still hook the ground up with External capacitor? Thanks for any help.........................

About your temperature question - it is normal for it to be pretty hot. When I installed my alternator in January I had to hook up the 3 connections that you mentioned. Check the volt meter in your dash (does every Z one?). if it is running around 14 or more you should be set. If you missed something it should make itself obvious.
