so I though tthta I had a short in my car somewhere(79' 280zx) and so I got quick disconnect battery cable for my battery so tht when I am not driving the battery does not drain. But It seems to not be fully charging when I am driving, and the car actually died once when I was driving it. My lights suddenly got really dim and then at a light it cut out. but I jumped it and got her home. the whole way home I had to keep the RPM's up over 3500, and I thought it was the altenator then, but the next day after I got the battery charged, the car started up and it ran at idle. I tried to test the altenator by unhooking the battery while it was running and the car still ran instead of turning off like a bad altenator would normally do. the only thing is that the car struggled alittle to keep running, like the amperage was barley sufficient to keep it running, but I could drive it around just fine

any insights would be great. thanks.

sounds like it is your alt. Temperature can effect amperage on a bad alternator, you could start with the voltage regulator, about 12 bucks. you should replace it w/ the alternator anyway so if it isnt the problem you would have needed it anyway. My 75 used to act like that when i really drove the piss out of it...finally it just went one day....good luck
