Hey everyone....Iv'e converted my 71 240 electrical system to the 78 280 alternator with integrated voltage reg. per the directions on one of the Z sites.

This entailed making a jumper out of the old Voltage Reg plug to use as a passthrough to the Alternator.

Questions

How do you encorporate the condenser in the new install?

The system seams to charge correctly initially, but the battery is drained if I leave the car more than a day or so, and when you turn the key off the engine keeps running (IE running off the alternator)

I have also been through several of the alternators which makes me think that I either did not wire the conversion correctly or there is something I am missing.

Any thoughts???

Sounds like you followed the upgrade as described here:
http://www.ideal-z.com/howto/alternator.htm

I thought those articles described the need for a diode on the field coil power, but I didn't notice that while reading. So I looked around for another source ... and only found a page that describes the change for old tractors, I think I'll post it anyway.

Section 2) "exciter field tap"
http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/articles/artint178.htm

...but I hope someone else has a better reference.

Also.....

A friend used an LED instead of the diode (ok technically it's the same thing), provides same solution and can also act as a troubleshooting device. Acts like the alternator warning light. If it is on, you have alternator problems.
