Alternator bracket help

274 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  EviL inside
Okay, it finally stopped raining and I was able to get outside and pull the alternator that I fried last week off, well what happens but the ubiquidous bolt break so I have to pull of the whole alternator bracket in order to get the *&^%(^$ off. So here is my dilema. I need to know if it is possible to get out the broken bolt or if I need a new bracket. And if I need a new bracket, does anyone have one lying around they can part with? I am in West Virginia and I can not find any cars in the local salvage yards.

Thanks in advance to all the Z Car pros that help us newbie's.

you can get the bolt out....any good hardware store, or Sears, carries several different kinds ofextractor tools, and since you have the bracket out, it won't be too bad....basically, you drill a hole in it, and use an extractor, which looks a little like a tapered reverse threaded drill bit, to get it out. It's a little easier to drill if you have access to a drill press. If it's possible for you to grind the bolt end, try grinding a slot in the end first and taking it out with a big screwdriver.otherwise, buy an extractor, and have at it. Once you're done, save the extractor for when you remove your manifolds......
Thanks for the info. Off to Sears I go.
as soon as you get back, just go ahead and throw the extractor and the bracket in the garbage,,,save some time,,since that's what you'll do with it anyways once the thing breaks off in there, you take it to a machine shop, and they laugh at you.

just don't touch it and take it to a machine shop,,,,or drill the whole thing out and heli-coil it.
