I have a 78 280z and I believe that I'm having a problem with my air flow meter. I recently had to replace the boot between the air cleaner and the Air flow meter and ever since then, I get a massive amount of black smoke out the tail pipe. Prior to me replacing the boot, the car ran fine.

If anyone has any suggestions as to a starting point, I would be very grateful for any help!!!!

RE: Air flow meter

easiest place to start is reove air filter to see if it cleans it up.If so replace it.
O.K. so it wasn't that easy!
Try removing the boot and manually pushing open the valve inside of AFM.It should open and close pretty easily.
Also check that all wiring connections to AFM are O.K. They could have been pulled loose while making initial repair. All is well??
No, well u could pop off black cover on side of AFM and make sure contact mechanisms are working properly, and might as well clean contacts by pulling a piece of fine sand paper between them.
After that, I'm pretty much lost.
Hope these tidbits do the trick!
