My wife is buying me a new dash for my 260Z for Christmas, and I am interested in installing a set of Autometer ultra-lite white face gauges. What size fits speedo and tach and what size fits for the rest? If anyone has done this, did you use electric or manual gauge? What is ya'lls opinion on these gauges, do you like them or not, and if not, why? Thanks for all your help.

True Answer

Unfortunately, what 74VWBUG told you is just not true.

The gauges do not just fit in. There is some fabricating to get them in. Also, don't buy them from Mototsport...buy them from summitt....MSA is too **** expensive.

I have the ultra-lites in my car shown here. The faces are actually silver. If you want white get the phantoms. I like the silver lip on the ultras though.

The 2 large ones are 5" gauges the speedo is manual and will work directly with your cable. The tach is electric.

The small gauges are 2 5/8" I have oil pressure, water temp, and fuel. These are all electric gauges. I didn;t want manual ones in the car as you have to run an oil line into the cabin. The fuel gauge I used is calibrated for the autometer sending unit which I fabricated to my tank.

Read this http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/autometer.htm. This will show you somewhat how to install them. You will probably deviate from his directions though.

These things are great. If you are going to have the dash out anyway I say go for it.
I am no real help with wiring if you have the stock harness. I rewired the entire car using a Painless harness so mine is very different.

email me directly with any questions.

A new dash for Xmas? I wish MY WIFE would buy ME a new dash! Honey, are you reading this? A "full dash cover" looks very nice also, and for about $79.00 you'd be hard pressed to know it wasn't the real $400.00+ thing.

I am half way through the install of the Phantom series. They look georgeous.Especially at night when they glow indiglo green.

As per previous posts, you will want to mount them with the dash out. (although you can get them temporarily fitted by wrapping some adhesive backed foam weatherstripping around them if you want to get the wiring right first.

I have gone with.

160MPH Speedo (on order) 5"
Plain 5" TACH installed
2 5/8 Water (electric)
2 5/8 Oil pressure electric
2 5/8 Volts (I have a GM alternator)
2" Nitrous Pressure (better believe it baby) not installed yet.
2" Rich/Lean indicator (well I am running carbs)
2" Fuel guage (cant figure out which one to go with)

I selected a fine piece of exotic hardwood from my local woodshop and proceeded to shape it and cut out three holes for the 2" guages. They fit right in the console in place of where the radio used to be. French polishing the hardwood in a week or so after the shellac cures.

It is expensive but the autometer gauges are worth it. Especially if any of your stock ones don't work anyway (Tach didn't work, clock didn't work, AMP didn;t work, fuel guage didn't work, replaced oilpressure sender, etc).
