Someone mentioned about turning the sproket inside the AFM but didn't mention if you should loosen or tighten the spring to get a little better performance out of it.

And could you explain why this works?

PS: This is for a 280ZX.

Loosen the hold down screw and tab, be careful, spring is under tension. Use a
screw driver to hold geared sproket in place. Then let sproket turn, loosen, about
2 - 3 teeth. I believe this is counter clockwise, you want to loosen sproket. Don't
go more than 2 - 3 teeth. This allows the flap to be more responsive, that is, it allows the
ECU to make the air flow mixture richer sooner while throttle opens. If you over do it, your
car will run too rich.
