I have a low-milage 83 turbo. When the A/C is on, I get a kind of dry, grinding noise that sounds like it is under the floor, but must be from the engine compartment. I see that there is a service bulletin 95057 June 1995 A/C compressor noise but don't know what the bulletin says or if it relates to the problem I'm having. Can anyone tell me what the deal is and, more importantly, what needs to be fixed (and will it be expensive?!).

When my 83 did this, it was the belt tensioner bearing. To replace it, just pull the belt loose, take the pulley off, take it to a bearing house and they will get you one from the back and it cost me about $3. Replace the bearing, reassembly, and your done. Other than that I do not know what else could be making nose with the A/C on. Unless it is a compressor bearing, but I would not think so. I guess the tensioner bearing is common to do that.
