Got a 1985 300ZX. Here's the problem. When I plug in the mass air flow sensor, the engine will rev over 2000 RPM's, however, it does so very jumpy and when brought back down to idle, the engine when idle at 400-500 RPMs and then quickly choke out. Exhaust smells of rich-burning fuel.
OK so I unplug the MAS. Engine idles fine, comparitively speaking of course, (700-900 RPM) however it will not rev above 2000 RPM's without the MAS being plugged in. Where is my problem? The MAS unit itself appears to be fine.

Check to make sure you don't have any air or vacuum leaks after the MAF.

Have you tried adjusting the adjustment screw on the MAF?
Is your O2 sensor working?
