I don't know if the brakes are that bad or not, but like you said every wrecked Z I've seen out here hit something stationary. In fact that's how I got my '79 for $600, the guys' wife hit a parked truck in a parking lot(low speed)- he was trying to teach her how to drive a stick!
Ive been looking at praise dyno brake in your neck of the woods(texas) they make all kinds of trick pad compounds for cars.
