We've got an '82zx non that's starting to burn some oil ( 1/2 quart every 800). I don't have a lot of time to put into it, but can anyone give me resonable pros / cons on rebuild vs. purchase of rebuild. long block vs. short. Amount to expect to spend in each situation. I've always done my own work but never rebuilt a z's engin. I expect to stay stock. All other aspect of the car are fine. If purchase of rebuilt most resonable any recomendations in the Dallas area ? Thanks in advance.

My New '82 Engine Cost Me $3500

That was a turnkey price based on an original cost of $1598 for a factory rebuilt non-turbo L28 engine, plus $100 freight from the dock to the shop. Things are a lot more pricey around here than in Dallas, by the way.

By all means go for a guaranteed factory rebuild over a mill cobbled together on a one-time basis by your friendly local wrench, even if he happens to work in a Nissan dealership. A factory rebuild costs about the same in the long run and it's put together by guys who are specialists at their trade. I learned this the hard way on my previous cars.
