82' 280ZX Will Not Start

1102 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  twmson
I have a 82' ZX (non Turbo) that died and now it will not start. It was running fine and just stopped and will not start.

It is getting fuel and will crank and the Coil is firing. If I ground a plug to the engine it will not fire but if I move to plug away from the engine or any ground it will fire. Have replaced the ignition control module (did not help). Plugs, wires, rotor and cap are all like new.

What to try next??

explain....if I move to plug away from the engine or any ground it will fire....

How do you know it is getting fuel?
CHTS, sensor in your head between 5/6 spark plugs.

try moving the wire to it around. If that disconnects, you get a car trying to start and getting no-where.

Keep my fingers crossed for you because that is an easy fix. May be something else.

With the tip of the plug contacting the engine the plugs will not spark when the engine is cranked but if you move the plug away from the engine it will spark when cranked.

Fuel: fuel is pumping through the filter and the plugs are wet. Also will not fire on starting fluid.
Pull all spark plugs and clean them.
Leave all plugs out let the cylinders dry out.
If it starts after replacing plugs good.

1 If it floods again look at afm flap sticking open. If that is the cause
Z will flood at idle and stall. it might not stick all the time.

2 If it floods again look at FPR take vacuum line off smell for gas
Leaking diagram will flood z.

3 If it floods again look at one or more fuel injectors stuck open
flooding z . If so try lightly tapping on injector may help.
But if this is the case pull injectors get them cleaned.

I have never heard of plugs firing ungrounded. Are you holding the metal part?

I have never heard of it either. I am holding the wire at the cap with insulated pliers.

Tried moving the CHTS...no luck.
Go back to the spark sparking with no ground...that is just plain evil.
you are grounding the electrode so you don't get a spark. you need to place the metal base on the the engine block not the tip. that is the hot wire.

Yes, I am grounding the base of the plug and no fire...move the plug away from the block and I get fire.
