I have a predictable failure of my 280zx ignition. Only when the vehicle is warm - my tach fluctuates as a signal of upcoming trouble. Then without warning - I loose ignition regardless of engine rpm or throttle position. Dropping the car back into gear and spinning the engine with the rear tires does not re-lite the cylinders ( no spark? ). I must turn the car off for a quick moment, then restart and it runs like new - until the tach gets mad again. That is tough to do in 55mph traffic.

Please advise.

Alot of times, this is the ignition module, which is on the side of the distributor. When it gets hot, it fails, and then when it cools back off, it works fine again. Since it is very predictable, I would suggest replacing this with a known good one, and see if it solves the problem. I have one that we tested yesterday, e-mail, or call me if you would like, and I will be glad to discuss it. thanks, Joe 1-800-533-5659

A way that you may isolate would be to disconnect the tach lead to see if the tach itself is involved. Power down then back up right away sounds like a reboot to me. Does not sound like time to cool off if heat is a problem. If I have your symptoms right that is. Those ignition module can be flaky All Z East may have his finger on it. -Ken
