I had a frozen lock question the other day but that seems moot now that my left front side is screwed. Some girl made a right hand turn from the left turn lane in front of me. So now my fender and bumper are smasheed in. Though the engine looks completely intact and sounds just fine when it is turned on. I'm just worried that it's going to be totalled out by the insurance company. I'm curious on what the market value of the car would be. If any of you guys have any ideas on it. I've never been in an accident before and I know they look around for the prices to see what it's worth. I'd just like to get an estimate myself.
It's a 1982 280ZX, non-turbo.
Has power locks and windows
Cruise control
Digital clock (if that's much)
Engine is totally clean and runs great.
Has 135,000 miles on it though but you wouldn't notice by driving it.
There was no body damage before at all...paint was very good except on the side mirrors where it looked a little shabby. Anything else I'm not mentioning?

Any thoughts from you guys would be great.
Thanks
Mike

SAME **** THING HAPPENED TO ME!
The insurance company wanted to pay me $2200 for the car, market value. I was hit in the back right quarter panel. Get some estimates yourself, and don't let them total it. If you go to court, you'll probally loose. Fight with them a little, but be prepared to just take the best offer. You will probally never get all of the money to fix it, but this is the price you pay for having an older car.

Good luck, keep us informed.

i'm with chris, try to deal with the insurance company tell them you really, really like the car and don't want it totaled, my sister went through the same thing with her 73 vw bug, she absolutely loves it and we told the adjuster we did'nt want it totaled, he worked with us and we got around $1,400. good luck.

All Mourn the Loss of Another Beloved Z-Car

I am very sorry to hear of you accident. I am with Chris on this. You will need to negotiate w/the insurance company, but in the end, the decision will be up to them. You could always buy the car back from them and then have it fixed. Gather up all of the receipts for things you have done to the car. This would be maintence and upgrades. This will show that the car was an exceptional example and it is worth more than the average Z. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Guess I just have to wait and see. There won't be an adjuster out till like monday. Sad thing is, I've had so many offers to buy this car since I got it. It's value seems so much more than what I'm guessing the insurance will offer. I'll have to let you guys know how it works out.

And too bad it didn't hit my bad door Mike...might have unlocked it!

Same thing happened to me too. Some bozo in a jacked-up pickup plowed into me as I was sitting at a stop light. Tried to claim I pulled out in front of him. The car drove perfect as before, the damage was really only cosmetic.

I got some estimates of $3500 to $4000 to fix my 81 zx. I knew they would total it. I paid $2500 3 years before. In looking for a value, the insurance company searched high and low for comparable cars. They offered me $2300. I shopped around and found first the cars I could buy around here for that were trash and two I could get used parts (hatch, tail light is all I needed) very inexpensively. I found a body shop willing to work with me. The ones I had estimates from insisted on all new parts, interior trim parts and these are mega-$$$.

In the end parts were about $250 Body work $850 and that included having one area of rust fixed. I bought some other new stuff including tires and cd player. Car still runs, drives and looks excellent.

There is hope. Look at all alternatives.
