I have an 81 Turbo. Do you hear the fuel pump kick on and pressurize right before you start the car. Were you underneath the hood doing something, that may have loosened an injection harness wire. Are you battery terminals tight?
Does the motor crank? Or is it stone dead?
I bought two 81 turbos. One I bought at a used car dealer with a real cheap paint job for $1200. The other I bought from someone that was sitting for four years. I couldn't get it started too. I replaced the brain, and it started right up. Good luck with your car,
but I would strongly suggest if you plan to keep the car, do what I did, Buy the factory
Manual. When I buy a Z, the first thing's I buy is a set of NGK's, and the factory manual. I got one shipped to my front door, with the Turbo supplement for $90.

Got the impression the car was running recently. If, and I repeat, if the car has been sitting for a very long time, chances are good it's the icu. Those boxes are not very durable. Disconnect the terminals to the battery. Disconnect the terminals to the brain. It's by the drivers feet up against the left, behind the Kick panel. Check the connections. Are they corroded? Run through the factory manual test, with an ohmmeter, If they are, and the car sat for a long time, especially outside, it's probably the ecu. That's what happened to the car i bought.
If you have to buy one from someone who knows what they have, you will pay a fortune. When I bought the car it wasn't running. My friend called up his towing membership place, we threw some plates on it and he told them will you get down here, some kids deflated my tires and threw leaves on the car. Meantime, the car is covered with leaves and acorns and a layer of dirt two feet thick, the rotors were rusted solid to pads. Some Spanish guy showed up with a Tow Truck, First thing he says is Give me $20, and I no say nothing Got the car towed 85 miles for $20. Ain't Life Grand. Still remember
the smoke and sparks (we sprayed wd40 all over the brake Pads) pouring out of this thing as they towed it away. If you are certain it's the ecu, I have an extra one in the garage, I know works.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING FUEL UP TO THE FUEL RAIL, TO CHECK THIS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A PRESSURE GAUGE, YOU CAN DISCONNECT THE FUEL INLET HOSE AND PUT IT IN A JAR AND HAVE SOMEONE TO TURN THE IGNTION ON, BUT DO NOT START IT! IF YOU ARE GETTING A GOOD AMOUNT OF FUEL IN THE JAR THEN THE FUEL PUMP MIGHT BE OK!
IF THAT'S OK, THEN CHECK TO SEE IF THE INJECTORS ARE GETTING POWER, THE BEST WAY TO CHECK THAT IS TO GO TO THE AUTO PARTS STORE LIKE AUTOZONE,OR PEPBOYS AND ASK FOR A NOID LIGHT TESTER FROM BOSCH F.I. SYSTEM.
REMOVE THE WIRING HARNESS OFF EACH INJECTOR AND ONE AT A TIME WITH THE NOID TESTER CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE NOID LIGHT , LITES UP ! , BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN HELPER TURNING THE ENGINE OVER EVERY TIME YOU USE THE NOID TESTER! (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE RECONNECTED THE FUEL LINE HOSE BEFORE YOU START USING THE NOID TESTER).
IF THE NOID LIGHT DOESN'T COME ON YOU MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE EFI UNIT OR A WIRING PROBLEM!
