I have a 79ZX in Chicago.
Is there anything which helps during start up in cold weather. I dont have a garage and although it starts after atempts lasting 3 to 10 minutes I know it is hard on the motor.
Does any one have solution???

Have you considered a block heater? They are standard epuipment in colder parts of the world.

my z has a hard time starting in cold weather too. it will crank but not start then it will eventually start. have you checked out your cold start valve? the one on my car is bad and i have to get a new one. depending on the temperature this might help, since that is what that valve is for. have someone check that out.

If it runs fine when it finally does start, then it is probably the Thermotime switch/ Cold Start valve combination. These two devices act like a choke on a carbureted engine. The Thermotime switch is activated when the temperature is below about 55F I think. It turns on the cold start valve when the ignition is in the start position. The cold start valve is an injector that sprays additional fuel into the intake.
