Hello,
I recently received a '79 280zx for free from a neighbor. I wish to recondition it, but have to get it running correctly first. Since the car has not been run in 3 years, I changed the oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, sparkplugs, and added fuel line cleaner. It runs, but under heavy acceleration, the engine make a popping noise sort of like an engine back-fire. Also, the engine will not rev above 4 grand in 2nd gear. What could be the problem? Do I need to replace or fix something else? Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

You're probably going to get a lot of free advice, but what you need is a Haynes or Chilton shop manual with a troubleshooter section. If you can't find a bargain at your local used book store, J.C. Whitney has them for $16.99 at (312) 431-6102. As I've often said, people who drive older cars and don't like reading shop manuals have got to learn to love pushing their cars. Good luck with your project.

here is some of that free advise that you have been warned about

BUY A TEST LIGHT
DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP
DO NOT PROBE, JUMP, CROSS WIRE, OR RE-WIRE ECM COMPONETS UNLESS DIRECTED TO BUY THE SHOP MANUAL YOU PURCHASED
DO NOT FALL INTO THE TRAP OF REPLACING ECM's, MODULES, AND OTHER COMPONETS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN CONDEMED BUY THE SHOP MANUAL YOU HAVE PURCHASED
HOWEVER IF YOU MUST THRW YOUR MONEY AWAY..... PLEASE E-MAIL ME AND I WILL GIVE YOU MY ADDRESS PLEASE MAY CHECKS PAYABLE TO I'M TO STUPID TO REPAIR MY Z SO I WILL JUST THROW PARTS AND MONEY AT IT.
HOPE YOU GET IT
