My owners manual states that the 78 280Z does not have a cat converter except for the California model. After the exaust manifold I have what appears to be a small muffler (doesn't look like cat) a resonator and then the muffler at the rear.
Factory shop manual calls the first thing a pre-muffler. Is there a good breathing exaust system that goes from the exaust manifold back? I keep seeing cat back systems but I don't need that apparantly.

Joe,
My '77 is a California version with the catalytic converter. It doubles as a resonator (pre-muffler?) I guess. I would suggest that you talk to a reputable muffler shop that works with hot rodders and see what they can tell you. The right shop can be very helpful.
