I've had a '76 Z manual transmission apart and replaced the bearings. Not very difficult, but I didn't have to disassemble the entire gear sets.

What are the symptoms you need to fix?

Aside from that, I'd recommend finding another transmission that's compatible and avoiding the teardown and rebuild. Or you can ask around indy shops in your area, looking for someone who is familiar with Z-cars. It will be an older mechanic.

Fixing a manual tranny isn't that hard with the shop manual and a parts source.

It's stuck in reverse but the shifter moves freely in all directions.


I agree with replacing with a transmission that's compatible. Trying to find someone who can work on it.

It might be something fairly simple.

On my '76, when I pulled the tranny and checked it out, I found that there's a front half and a back half of the case, and both bolt up to a carrier plate in the center of the tranny. Once I pulled the case halves, I could clamp that center plate in a bench vise and have the entire transmission neatly displayed in mid-air in front of me. Very cool design, and that made it very easy to see all of the transmission pieces.

I worked on that nearly 30 years ago, so I don't recall much more than I have shared here.

Pilgrim is correct. I have had the split pins in the shift rods break, causing the problem you have described. See photos. The reverse shift lever split pin is the green circled. Easy fix. Just use a punch to remove the broken pin, and put in a new one. Also a good idea is to find a smaller pin that will go inside of the new one. Less chance of breaking again.

These are great photos, thanks. Probably beyond our ability to fix ourselves. Hoping to find someone in the Kansas City area interested in doing this work.
