I wrote yesterday about my car dieing concerning the relays. I have a 78 280z california model (if it matters). I am trying to get it running good so that I can sell it. To try to clear up my last cry for help the problem seems to be stemming from under the box that is on the right side of the car. The engine will just die while driving, hot, cold, long trip, short trip, sometimes will go 1 day, 2days between kills, there is no certain condition. I went out and started yanking and banging and discovered that if I hit that box(relays under it) on the right side of the car I can make it die the same way as driving. A light tap will just make it fade a little and then recover. That is why I believe it is one of the relays under it but I don't know how to figure out which one. The car will always start right back up. Thank you.

You need a Factory Service Manual to fix this quickly and for the lowest cost to you otherwise you will probably end up changing a lot of unnecessary parts. When you sell the car sell the FSM with it and charge an extra $100.00.

Now for your problem.

Remove and clean the battery terminal connections. Use a DVM. What is the battery voltage with the engine 'Off'? What is the battery voltage with the engine 'Running'?

Remove the relay box cover and one by one remove the relays and inspect the connections for corrosion. Clean them up and put a small amount of silicone dielectric grease on each one then reinstall the relay.

Do the same thing for each of the fusible links.

Put a fuel pressure gauge between the fuel filter and the top fuel rail. When the engine dies what is the fuel pressure. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

Start with these simple things and report back your results.

What were the results from the post from Dec 11, 6:06am at:

Did you resolve the problem with cracking distributor caps from post:

http://www.zcar.com/forums/read.php?f=1&i=236739&t=236739

Also under the same post, while no one pointed it out, the relay with 6 pins is the fuel pump relay.

And finally, what were your results from the thread you started at:

When you post a question, and people respond with sugestions, it would be benificial, to you, to post some form of response. This is the only way to methodicaly trouble shoot a problem.

If you are sick and go to a doctor and are prescribed something and that does not work do you go back and tell the doctor? Or do you go to another doctor and start all over again?
