77 bogs and dies-Starts later/ Fire or Fuel?

Hi Guys,
It has been many years since I was here. I rebuilt/restored my 77 in 2002. The car will start easily but will die 5 minutes later. It dies idling, driving, or even full out. At full out it can bog out and come back. The will start again a few minutes later. Searching suggests there may be rust from the tank temporarily blocking fuel or the coil is dying. My truck had a similar problem and turned out the power supply to the computer was loose. Can someone tell me where to start testing based on these conditions? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for searching first. :)
I'd start by looking in the tank where the lines go in the top. you can lift the carpet in the hatch and there is an access panel to get to it. Better yet, check the screen in the inlet side of the fuel pump. Replace fuel filter if it's old. It does sound like a fuel starvation issue. OOps, I misread, :-[ I don't know if yours has the access in the hatch. The other two suggestions are easy ones though.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm trying to check the inlet screen as suggested. My Clymer manual does not say which one is the inlet but I assume it is the 3/8" line going to the end of the fuel pump. I had the line off and its hard to see. Is the screen a little cone screen inside this small line?
Re: 77 bogs and dies-Starts later/ Fire or Fuel?

YES the inlet screen is in the inlet side of the pump. A 14mm will be your friend. TIME TO ADD the fram G-3 to prevent this from happening again. ($4-5) Norm k.

OK so take the fuel pump apart to check the screen. Add in line filter. I noticed a very small filter looking thing in the back on the return line. What is that?
Re: 77 bogs and dies-Starts later/ Fire or Fuel?

Norm, I'm sorry but I can't anything a 14mm will fit there. At the head of the fuel pump where the line connects, there are 4 phillips screws. Is the screen behind that cap?

No need to disassemble the pump. The screen is where the hose from tank goes onto the pump. Pull that hose, look into pump there should be the screen.

Hey guys, don't think I'm an idiot but there is no screen there that I can see. It is also clean as a whistle. No signs of any debris. I can see an amber colored collar that may have been a screen maybe but I can see right to the bottom of the inlet.
Re: 77 bogs and dies-Starts later/ Fire or Fuel?

It appears this problem was/is heat related. Another sympton was the temp would rise looking like the thermostat was sticking. I was timing how long it would run before it died and the temp got to 225. So I tapped the thermo housing to unstick the thermostat and it died. Checked the coolant and it was low.(about a gallon). Refilled the coolant and now it keeps running beyond the 5-10 min. like it is cured. Any thoughts?
