76 280 - Need help removing the trip meter knob....

1710 Views 15 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Budz Z
Does anyone know how to remove the trip meter knob next to the instrument panel dimmer? I have removed the dimmer knob but for the life of me i cannot get the trip meter knob off. The dimmer knob just pulled right off. Is there a secret to the other one?

I bought a dash cap but it will not install over the knobs.

Thanks for any help!

I too would like to know about this, i'm in the same boat.
I'd like to know how to put it back on! I've watched my trip meter roll over so many times now...
I could care less about the trip meter since my speedo is not even hooked up ;)
Wouldn't you need your car running to have the speedo hooked up?

;) ;D ::) 8)
The trip meter is screwed on to the back of the speedo with a very tiny screw, on a post on the back of the speedo. if you unscrew that, the whole long springy cable should slide out.
Its running just not moving I know its a technicality.

Oh and I'm coming up to Canada again in May/June!
Cool. I believe there is an all provice Datsun drive.

I'm hoping to have the black car's upgrades fully installed (yes, that's right... not yet... sigh) and take a drive out there, couple three four hours each way.

I'll PM you the details.
Ok kool thanks!

Will that free the knob on the front of the dash? That is what I am trying to remove.
I removed my cap on my 78 without removing the knobs.
Warm up the cap with hair dryer i bet it will go on.
Thanks for the advice but I still can't get the darn thing off and my cap will not fit over the knob unless I cut the hole out. I will do that as a last resort but in the meantime I'll keep tugging and tugging on that knob.
I have never removed that knob so as to how you do it I can't answer. I do know that many knobs you push in and turn. Sure it's not a reverse thread? Just WAG's. When you do get will you please post back. I'm going with a full cap after I get a couple more gauge's. Just can't stand the cracks anymore.
I'll give that a try. Thanks!
