73 tach problems

Tach works intermittently when in the dash. I removed it and ran wires straight from a good ground, straight from the positive battery terminal and straight to the negative terminal on the coil. ( I have the later style tach with the 3 post connector.) The tach works in this configuration but reads approximately 1K rpm high. When I remove the coil wire from the tach it still reads 1K rpm, but it is still connected to the battery. I had the tach internals checked and everything is ok. I think that there may be a bad power wire or a bad ground wire. Why would the tach continually read 1K rpm with no input from the coil? I have a Pertronix 0.6 ohm Flamethrower II ignition coil matched to an Ignitor II electronic ignition unit. Have removed the ballast resistor and added the loop wire so the car starts properly.

If you converted to a 260Z/280Z tachometer,
1. Did you also put a resistor in the circuit?
2 Is the tach signal wire hooked up to coil negative?

I did not convert to a 260Z tach, but it is a late 7/73 tach with the 3 wire connector.
Yes the signal wire is hooked to the coil neg.
It's a Pertronix ignitor II system, which calls for removing the resistor and uses a 0.6 ohm coil.

I did not say ballast resistor. The 3 wire tachometer needs a resistor, 2.2k Ohm 1/4 watt, in between the tachometer and the negative of the coil.
Thanks Steve, I will install the resistor.
