I am thinking of getting a junkyard 5-speed to replace 'ol clunky in the 78. What years Z-5speeds will bolt in for a perfect replacement for my 78? is it a 78-83 thing?

I could be wrong, but unless you get it from a 78, you might have some problems with the shaft and rear end.

78 trans rock! I think. my opnion, it's smoother then 81-83 trans. I would try to swap the shifter from 81 to 78. zx shifter is shorter.

P.S. 81 is better on the highway little

the trans that will fit are the 77-79 5 speed, the 80 5-speed and the 81-83. i agree with yo and would stick with the 77-79. pair it up with a 3.7 or higher r-200 and you're set. the other trans will bolt up with no problems. the borg warner unit that came on the turbo zx's will also bolt up but with some modifications. good luck
