3rd gear kind of rough

524 Views 9 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  salvadoran300zx
So about a week ago I had the clutch master and slave replaced, and then adjusted the clutch. Now it seems like the car is just a tiny bit too loud, especially when accelerating in 3rd gear, just seems kind of rough. Could this be because I adjusted the clutch too far forward, and now gears are grinding? Or is this another issue entirely? Any ideas.

how many miles on your car?
when did you perform the last oil change to the tranny?
hmmm, good question. Not since I bought it in November of 2009. Before that, who knows. Still in the learning stages here with all this. Could that be the problem? Can I do it myself? Also I should add that I noticed this before the whole clutch issue came up recently.
it would be well worth the try.

You could do this yourself and try several different options, some have had great results with Redline MT90, some others with the Purple something, and some others with 20w50 synthetic motor oil.

I particularly chose 20w50 synthetic. You will need 3 quarts, a 1/2" torque wrench, a pan to catch the oil on and some jackstands.

Raise up your Z on the side of the passenger if you don't want to lift all four wheels. (It should be leveled at the time of fill up, but I can tell you by recent experience it will only take 3 quarts.

FIRST undo the fill plug on the side of the gearbox. IF and only IF that comes out, then undo the drain plug at the bottom and clean the magnet on the drain plug.

Put the plug back on, torque at 25 lb/ft, refill, torque the fill plug at 25 lb/ft and you're golden.

to fill the tranny you'll need to squeeze the bottle where your oil is... so be patient. I used a 5/16" hose that I passed through a hole I made on the screw lid of one of the quart bottles and squeezed away.

let us know how it goes

oh, but to answer your question, yes, it could be that you're oil is no longer lubricating your tranny and hence the growl... but there could also be some other mechanical issues where parts start giving in

but for 30 bucks worth of oil and about 40 minutes time, I'd say it's well worth the shot
Wow, very helpful info. Thanks a lot, I'll take your advice.
Go to your local Lowes or Home Depot and buy about three feet of 1/2 in clear vinyl hose and a funnel to fit the hose. Thread the hose down by the battery to the tranny with someone to guide the hose into the filler hole. Install three quarts of 20/50 synthetic motor oil. Done, no mess, no fuss.
