I've searched the archives, and didn't find the exact answer I need. I know this is a common subject so forgive me.
Well, to the question. I have a 77 280z. Stock besides exhaust and intake. From what I read, it seems that the injectors can be used with stock fuel rail and pump, but modding the AFM is required. What exactly is required to make this run well enough to be streetable?
Also, I know Palnet used to make fuel rails in the past, but not sure if he's still around. If so, what kinda pricing and such is involved in that? Thanks guys
You are missing the point. The engine can't use the extra fuel so there is no point. I'm running 265cc stock nissan turbo injectors on a -HOT- NA engine and they are more than enough. Until you do some fairly major engine mods, the stock injectors are fine. Just throwing more fuel into an engine doesn't make it make more power, you have to make it breath more AIR so that it needs more fuel to go with that air to make more power.
Also the LAST think you want to do is use a turbo car computer. That EFI system isn't very good even for a turbo car and would make a NA car run like crap. The easiest/cheapest way to get more power from a 280Z is a mild camshaft and a early 240z SU carb setup.
Thanks for clearing that up. I wasn't trying to get a ton of extra power. My only reasoning, was that theres some for sale on here for 100$ and I need new injectors. I'm going to go research some carb conversions. Thanks.
If you plan on upgrading beyond 300hp, i'de go a turbo... the carb setup is really good if you just want a bit of extra power quickly/cheaply, but if your looking at a long term project i personally think the turbo is cheaper in the long run, you cant turn up the boost on carbs...
On another note - the NA carb engines sound **** hot, yummy...
It just depends. I've been going back and forth this week between a hot NA car and a turbo swap 280Z running 14PSI boost and to me, the NA car is much more fun to drive. When it's boosting the turbo car is making more power but I love the instant throttle responce a NA car has and like you said the NA car at 7000 WOT sounds much better!
I've been on the fence about trying to get more out of my NA engine (going 3.1 stroker with P90 head) or going turbo (I have the parts to do either one..) and after driving these two cars, I've decided to go the NA route.
