260z rear end making noise

827 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  montana240z
Ok i just got the 260z a couple weeks ago and it drove fine but a day or two ago the rear end started to make thunking noises and only when i take off in first and when shifting hard. it also makes a winding sound all the time and the faster i go the louder it gets.
i think it mite be the pinion bearing but i dont know, i checked the wheel bearing and they seem to be fine but other than that i have no clue what it might be!

do you also hear a clunk sound when you shift?
ya but only if i get on it
you might want to check your rear differential mount. my 76 had the clunk and after getting a descent mount, the clunk went away. so even if you don't suspect it, you should get under there and at least look at it's condition.

Bon
I second what Bonfire said, check you mount. My 240 had the same problem. I purchased a solid mount from Arizona Z. The whine is a bit louder, but the clunk is gone so I'm happy.
