New guy alert, from Tennessee

Hey everyone, so I'm kinda new to this club I guess you could say. My father bought a 84 300zx AE right before I was born back in 1992. When he passed in 2011, and I was only 18, I knew I wouldn't really be able to do much with it at that point. So, it has been sitting at my mom's house for the last 6 years or so. I remember growing up, and him letting me switch gears while I was in the passenger seat. I just love this car so much, and with them being as rare as they are, why would I not try to keep the dream alive. So, this is my entry to the Z world on my own. I know it will be costly, but I think it'll be worth it if I can keep this car up, and alive to try to pass on to my kids as well.

Tennessee,

So do you have this car now in your possession and what are your plans/goals?

some good starter links to check out so you can get as much info as possible on the Z31 (your car's chassis, 1984-1989)

www.z31performance.com
www.xenonzcar.com

and of course, here at zcar.com; specifically the 300zx section.

the 84 AE is not too rare of a car. I believe around 5,000 of them were produced, so plenty still around. unfortunately, many sitting and under neglect. but the AE came with a lot of features that base model Z31s didn't have. I love the all black interior

do a reference check on the VIN & Chassis numbers and make sure it is a true AE.

enjoy and learn all your can. the Z31 is a fun and cool car, however it can be a pain. just keep up on the maintenance requirements and take care of it.

Cheers,

Bon

Where in Tennessee?

Might check out Middle TN Z Club in Nashville, and for mechanical repairs, Crawford Z Car Service also in Nashville. They've been looking after my Zs and other Nissans since 1987!

@bonfire79 Yes, I do have it currently! It was my dad's so I plan on getting it running, and in shape enough to get out a few times a week. I'd love to do a complete overhaul, but right now I'm more focused on getting it reliable. Yes, most of the one's I've found online are in pretty rough shape all around. Mine is in no way better shape, but it could always be worse! Thanks!

I'm near Chattanooga, but I'd love to get it running well enough to take to some places more towards Middle Tennessee!

you know, it is probably not necessary to do a complete overhaul, unless the engine is seized or damaged somehow. do your checks and inspections first before you decide to tear out the motor.

how many miles are on it? if its over 60,000 and you don't know if the timing belt was changed or not, get it changed. you're CHTS and harness is probably bad so check that too because changing that is ideal when doing the belt since you'll have access to it. I think the first thing you need to do is run the ECU for fault codes. start with that and see if any of the components are faulty (you will know if the CHTS is bad by doing this) and there is a reference for how to do the check on xenonzcar.com and in the downloadable FSM. step by step, one day at a time.
