1987 na 300zx

My problems are two fold. I recently purchased a 1987 na that had a bad motor in it. I put a good motor in the car but when I started it I can't get it to run smoothly. It seems to be running too rich. I have replaced the tps and checked the vacum lines. I am mow stuck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, none of the instruments on the analog dash or the digital climate control unit are working. In fact, none of the electrical systems in the car are working including the headlight motors or the interior lights. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. P.S., this is my first time posting on the forum.

Re: 1987 na 300zx

what year motor did you put in? Entire motor or short block? lots of things make for poor running you need to do some testing and then get back with the results. download the factory service manual from xenon (do a google). then start testing. z31 are somewhat complicated in their electronics. the electrical problem could well be why it doesn't run well.

If nothing electrical works first start with battery and cables be sure they are good. Then check fusible links. Until you have all that corrected you may be just wasting time with any testing except perhaps for verifying wire continuity.

86T, 350 Nismo 08 (#1415) gone but fondly remembered 81T, 83T, 83, 85T, 86T, 96TT

Will do. Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. As soon as I do some more testing I will get back to you. By the way, the motor was from another 87 and it was the entire motor. Thanks again.

Re: 1987 na 300zx

RogerZ, I took your advice and checked the fusible links and found one under the hood that was bad. I replaced it and it took care of the interior and dash problems. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I still have the problem of the car burning rich and not wanting to idle. Is it possible that the MAF meter is the problem? I am going to remove it and see if it needs cleaning or possibly replacing. Thanks again for your help. I am also soliciting advise from anyone else who may have encountered this problem.

Re: 1987 na 300zx

How do you test the MAF meter and what is the best way to clean it?

Re: 1987 na 300zx

Put a new head from odessa on my 87 na, added pacesetter headears, bypassed the hose from the exhaust to the smog control on the driver side near the nose of the car. Now she will not run unless the hose to the auxiliary air control valve is disconnected. There is also a serious vacuum in the crankcase when the oil cap is removed. I changed the aacv but this had no affect. I am completely stumped now. The car will run when the hose is not connected. If anyone has any suggestions that might help they would be greatly appreciated.
