1987 300zx 2+2

i was given a 1987 nissan 300zx 2+2 as a gift from my parents 3 years ago. when i got it, it had a bad transmission. i got it rebuilt ($1,500) here in my home town of gillette, wyoming. i have had problems with the transmission ever since i got the car. it was in the shop 3 times. i only got to drive it for 2 weeks then my motor blew(bent valves). i have now gotten a used engine for it (VG30E) with around 100k miles on it.

1. i would like to know if this model can be swaped to a manual.

I am a big fan of the 300zx and am now restoring this car. (to bad i live in wyoming) everything is quite a bit more expensive here and a lack of parts.

2. i was also wondering if anyone would know anymore sites that offer after market products.

3. i am also looking at changing the intake, i seen on z31.com about a 200sx tb and a pathfinder intake manifold. is this wise?

4. also i am having a custom intake made for my z. it will be a large box to allow for ram air funneled down to the square filter in the back of it. where it goes from there depends on the intake manifold i install. i will also be buying headers and custom exaust (without the cat) using flowmaster muffler and i do not remember what brand headers.

thanks for your help

1. Yes absolutely, this is possibly the most commonly asked question around here. From my own searches you'll need the following:

tranny (duh), mounts, drive shaft, possibly differential flange, a pedal, all the clutch hydraulics, torque converter to replace flywheel.

More detailed information on this swap can be found here:

<http://z31.com/oboard/archives/view.pl?204>
<http://z31.com/oboard/archives/view.pl?170>

Do further searches on here and also on z31.com for more information, but that's a good starter.

2. <http://www.www.zcarparts.com>, <http://www.www.thespecshop.com>

3. Forget about the TB until you're pushing serious HP because you wont notice anything until you're at that stage. The pathy manifold doesn't fit perfectly due to hood clearance and there's modifications needed for it to. Options are gutting the stock one, or getting a custom made one. Others on here who have done it (<http://www.88hybrid.com>) will be able to give you more info on that than I can.

Just know also, others will tell you to convert to turbo for serious HP. This might be wise before you go ahead and do all of the above. I have dumped alot of coin into my NA, and sure it hauls ass and top speed is amazing but as far as pickup and acceleration goes my turbo at 10psi just smokes my NA. Something to think about...

the best place to ask questions is the newer site at 88Hybrid.com

Re: 1987 300zx 2+2

We just have a ton of people that MODIFY there Z31, and have sections just for these questions. Jasons writeups are good reading, as well as Zbums pages, though his pages are more geared for info concerning factory specs, part numbers ect,ect..., and I recommend as much reading as you can before you start asking questions on the "other" sites, as they like to bash people.

There is a great classified section, and a Complete 5 speed swap there.

Re: 1987 300zx 2+2

the pathfinder intake isnt worth the effort, get a custom one like 88 hybrids style.. yes it can be swaped to manual it has been done alot.. youll need a manual tranny, center console, and computer.. and other various things.. www.zcarparts.com victoria british and a few others offer aftermarket parts.

Re: 1987 300zx 2+2

TB waste of time unless your pushing high hp.. On an NA it's wiser for the turbo conversion and www.redz31.com is an outstanding display of procedures that you will endure in your conversion. But before going into all that just make sure everything is in tact on your engine do your own tuneups with the Haynes manual and when you run into problems search and if that fails z31 zcar is here.
