who knows how to take the ignition lock apart

Anybody know how I go about taking the ignition lock apart without destroying it? I have already suceeded in taking two separate ones apart and at the same time ruined them (because of frustration). I have been trying to remove the cylinder from it's housing. All these ign. locks that I have came from the salvage yard with no keys. I have two more to contend with so I figure I'd better ask first before starting again.

Re: who knows how to take the ignition lock apart

The best way is to remove the entire unit from the steering column and take it to a locksmith who will take it apart and make new keys.
I hope you know how to remove the assembly from the steering column... remove the upper and lower plastic covers on the column. On the left of the column is the screws for the ignition assembly. Two of the four screws have blank heads. You will need a sharp chisel to make a groove so you can use a screwdriver to remove them. Don't forget to unplug the connector on the back of the ignition switch. Remember... let the pros handle the removal of the tumbler assembly!

Re: who knows how to take the ignition lock apart

redbird,
I agree with johnb510. I have the same problem. I went to Kragen Auto here in Ca. where you can buy the lock, tumbler and key for $25. When I looked at the instructions it was refering to some special tools and the instructions were a mess. I returned it and am now going to find a locksmith. It will be cheaper if you have the assembly off and take that in, you won't be charged the additional charge for the call. Hope this helps and good luck! Lt.

I totally rebuilt mine but it's not an easy process. I replaced all of the old worn brass tumblers with new mild steel ones. It can be done if your mechanically inclined and stupid (or cheep) enough to try it.
