I bought a 1982 zx and it has a fuel pump shut off switch that shuts off more than the pump it also turns off and on things on the dash such as the “fasten seatbelt” Light, I want to remove this switch and wire it back to the ignition is there a diagram available for this?
The answer is simple. Download a copy of the original wiring diagram, and when you remove the switch return the harness to stock. That's how you know what you're dealing with. Chances are that all you'll need to do is trace the wires coming from the switch and look for the matching color wires in the harness, and re-connect them.
See, there is no "switch", per se. On the 280, there is a relay, with three inputs, making activation contingent on other factors. While I am not familiar with the ZX, I seriously doubt that things got simpler. In fact, I believe an inertial sensor was added to the mix.
These related functions are intended to forestall things like a persistently running pump and engine adding more fuel in an already fiery crash. You know, one of those actually useful Safety things.
It really would be simpler, if not wiser, to disable the seat belt light. Mine was dark for decades before I replaced it with another function.
That's life. Again we find that nothing is as simple as it should be. :frown
EDIT: in re-reading, it appears that the switch is a factory item. I thought from the original post that it was an aftermarket owner add-on. I stand corrected. I'm a believer in keeping the wiring stock, so why not see if replacing the relay eliminates the problem?
Hello DawsenShoots, just google ford fuel pump inertia switch and you will find your solution, It just wires between your pump + input and pump. Ford used those for years and now they have cheaper aftermarket ones
Ford theory or not, better to check the FSM and see if it's tied in with anything else ... a relay and/or interrupting other wiring circuit components.
But it seems to me that this thread has gotten somewhat surreal.
As near as I can tell, among all the contributors, it would appear that very, very few demonstrate any familiarity with even a remotely related wiring diagram of the complexity of the activation relay.
So, as I bow out of what has become a rather pointless conjecture, I will leave with one note of what should be of more than passing interest: the 280 fuel pump activation relay has 14 connections and two actual relays. I trust this will be food for thought.
I rewired it the switch was a owner add on it appears I was not specific on this but I appreciate the answers, the switch was spliced into the wires and put where the ashtray came out below the radio I feel much better now!
