78. 280z Black Pearl

Hi everyone new to Forum.. I wanted to confirm if I do really have a Black Pearl SAP. I just finally found life long search of my true love... All original 1978 never been torn apart.. Found color code on Radiator stating 638... Key still has some black paint on it... unfortunately the car was painted white over the original black but I can see underneath paint clearly... From all the research, can I possibly have a BlackPearl??.. thks Ash

I'd say it checks all the boxes so far. The final check is does it have the black pearl wheels?:

Shame about the paintover. And the sunroof. Lot of work to get this car back to original condition, if that's what you're wanting to do. Good luck with it!

Get it re-sprayed back to black at Maaco for $700 then sell it to the right buyer for the premium it commands. Then get a standard Z and go from there. At least that's what I'd do.

From what I've read, the Aluminum road wheels were an additional option beyond the SAP. Supposedly you could also get the black metallic paint without the SAP but I've never seen one.

The black pearl car did not come stock with the SAP automatically. It had to be added to the car and the SAP was available in sections or the complete package. The package included the special mags which by the way were not exclusive to the BP z's, neither was the SAP itself. It could be ordered on any Z car back then. The complete SAP included the mags, rear window louvers, dual sport mirrors, and bumper over rider bars. I bought my first z new from the dealership I was working at in 1978 and it is a BP z with a full SAP package. I still have it today and it's still black of course. Since then I've added another one to my collection although it desperately needs a full make over. The cars came with either a 5 speed or an automatic. I had a 3rd BP z about 20 years ago that some idiot had painted white and I sold it to one of my workers I had at the time. He eventually sold it and got out of z's.
As far as whether you have an original BP z or not, you probably do because of the paint code tag. If you lift up the false floor on the back half of the cargo compartment you should see your spare and accessories back there and the original color of paint on the floor pan, in this case it should of course be black. Putting it back to the original BP paint code is going to make the car worth more, especially if it's all original elsewhere. The SAP increases the value on any Z back then, but even more on the BP version. Z man of Washington
