The answers to your questions are covered very well in the Air Conditioning section of the Factory Service Manual. That is, as long as your system is still using stock R12 refrigerant.

I'd just quote the values but there's a lot more you need to know. Read through the A/C section concerning proper oil type and amount (and why it can be difficult to determine exact amount), refrigerant contamination, evacuating, and charging. There's a lot to be learned...

@Powerglide r134a and @cgsheen, okay thanks ill have to get one, I had looked in the origional owners manual and they did not list anything. Im planning on putting in a new compressor (PO removed it) and doing a good flush and vacuum before switching to 134.

For 77 its 1.3-2 lbs of r12. It will be slightly different for 134a, so I am planning on charging until I get good temperatures out of the vent and good pressures

I had to add about 5 cans of R12. Not sure on the can units.

The oil amount is the tricky thing... The FSM assumes you're working with a system that's been in operation. In this case the oil has been circulating throughout the system - carried by the refrigerant - so only a certain portion of the original charge is in the compressor. It's also assuming that if there was a refrigerant leak there was also a loss of oil.

AC-16 describes the type of oil Nissan originally used (R12 commonly used Mineral Oil). AC-25 describes an Oil Check procedure. AC-72 shows the total oil capacity (for a new or completely clean system) to be 9.1 US fl oz. (9.5 Imperial oz). (refer to the 1976 FSM, and AC-66 in the 1978 FSM - the 1977 refers to cubic inches for some reason. All three state 270 grams.)
