Engine diesels

every now and then when i shut the car off, the motor turns off and then a half a second later it turns again. now.........when i say turns, i mean it makes i liitle vibration.... sometimes completely undetectable to the passenger because it's so close to when the motor shuts off. it tends to do it more when the car is warmed up. any ideas?

RE: Engine diesels

My 240 does that too sometimes. higher octane gas seems to help a little. mine idles high too (1100 hot), i'll have to get a timing light on it and check timing advance, and lower the idle.

RE: Engine diesels

Normally dieseling applies to carbon in the combustion chamber or incorrect timing. Is it a high mileage car or maybe poor service history?

RE: Engine diesels

How does one go about minimizing the amount of carbon in the combustion chamber without yanking out the head?

I've heard on V8s, pouring a couple of oz of water down the carb throat while the car is running & reving it periodically will loosen up the carbon within. Has anyone heard of this or have done this?

RE: Engine diesels

I'd adjust your idle down first, mine has a lot of trouble when idling high. I also found that higher octane fuel fixed the problem too.

On a side note, if you have carbs (think idle is all controlled on FI), what I do when I turn off my car, I put my foot under the gas pedal and pull it out a bit. It makes it drop down to about 600rpm and always stops when I turn off the key.
