81-83 5speed into a 79 ?

Has anyone put a 5speed from a 81-83 in a 79 ZX with a 3.7 rear? It looks like 1st, 2nd and 3rd would be a little lower over all and 5th way lower ratio. Just wonder if drive ability changed or is a 3.7 close enough to a 3.9 to notice no difference?
Thanks

I went to a 3.9 on my NA 280Z and noticed quite an improvement. I believe with the turbo engine most people go with the 3.7 because you get more use out of the turbo that way.

The gear ratios in the T5 work best with the 3.54 gear.

The gear ratios in the later model NA 5 speed (81 to 83) work best with a 3.90.

The gear ratios in the early 5 speed works best with a 3.54.

A friend of mine did a T5/3.90 setup and as I told him, the gears run out too quickly.

when selecting a rear diff ratio, you must also consider the ratios of each gear in the trans.

Re: 81-83 5speed into a 79 ?

Thanks for the post black gold man, however I'm not going to change the stock rear gear of 3.7 . Looks like 79 was the only year of this ratio on a ZX. Wondering if someone has done this and if the change was big or small in how it drove with the close ratio tranny and the 3.7 rear. I had a 82 and the 2nd to 3rd gear shift had less rpm drop, but had a 3.9 rear.

Otherwise, I'll look for a 79 specific tranny, but I hear the 81-83 are somehow better built.
